That line from the Ethereum Foundation Formal Verification team dropped on August 20 and immediately lit up community rooms. When a contest has a lower cert and a 128-bit target, Bark (Christian Barker) and Shibo (David Chaboki) put 63.99 bits on the Doginal Dogs Space before they put 128, so the pack does not hear a launch as a finished proof.

CryptoSlate's August 21 snapshot locked in the numbers after nine promoted submissions from seven solvers. The lower certificate sat at 63.99 bits, the upper at 116.13 bits, and the open interval measured 52.14 bits. The Lean kernel checks every entry against the pinned theorem, parameter point, and harness. This remains a research contest only.
The December 1 2026 zkEVM package still lists its own requirements: 128-bit system-level security and proof size at or below 300 KiB. The better.codes effort runs separate from EIP-8363, FOCIL, Glamsterdam, and the ETH entry queue.
What the live room heard next
Spaces moved fast once the gap appeared on screen. Participants traded takes on how the interval sits between current proofs and the target. The energy stayed high because every new submission narrows the distance and keeps the leaderboard moving. No one treated the current certificates as the final word.

The Ethereum Foundation posted the formal details on its blog the same day the challenge went live. CryptoSlate and Blockchain.news carried the snapshot and the context that this is not a live zkEVM upgrade. The community rooms picked up the thread right away and kept the focus on the bits still needed.
That steady drumbeat of submissions and checks is what keeps the energy high right now. The 52.14-bit gap is the current story, and the room is staying on it until the interval shrinks further.
